The Deron School- Montclair
Montclair, New Jersey
Project Type: Building Addition Project Size: 15,000 Square Feet Services Provided: Architectural, Civil, Structural, Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing, and Fire Protection Engineering. Project Description: Jarmel provided design services and contract administration for this three-story, 15,000 sq ft addition to the original 1912 stone masonry school. The addition includes two main levels above grade and several sub-levels. The existing building lacked modern conveniences such as an elevator and air conditioning, and there were limited provisions for the handicapped. The expansion was designed to improve facilities and upgrade the school to meet the Department of Education’s facility standards. To achieve these results, Jarmel Kizel ensured that the building would be handicap accessible, have state-of-the-art classrooms and specialty instructional rooms for speech, occupational therapy, physical therapy and occupational training purposes. Deron chose to expand the facility, adding an elevator and installing air conditioning in the existing historic building. Deron Schools are state-approved private day programs established to provide educational opportunities for special-need students, ages five to twenty-one, who cannot be served in a regular classroom setting by the special education programs of their local districts. Unique Project Aspects: Jarmel Kizel managed the entitlement process for the client by preparing necessary drawings to obtain use variances and they also developed a strategy for The Deron School’s presentation to the zoning board. |
